The Pruning Collective

Grow Wild York is proud to be the home of The Pruning Collective. We are a team of fruit tree experts who can restore, reshape and boost the productivity of your trees.

Pruning a fruit tree requires a different approach to pruning regular trees if you want to make sure you have a delicious and plentiful crop year after year.

Resist the urge to hire someone for a quick 'trim' as improper techniques can result in excessive growth in undesirable areas, damage or even disease.

We have experience in all aspects of maintaining fruit trees, including:

  • Tree health
  • Annual, formative pruning
  • Light training and shaping of young trees
  • Restoration of neglected or older trees
  • Long-term yield optimisation
  • Grafting new trees
  • Variety selection

We apply a nature friendly, holistic approach to tree care and orchard management.

Neilan

With over 6 years of experience working with fruit trees, Neilan’s passion for fruit growing was honed when he discoverd The Orchard Project and attained his Level 2 qualification in Forest Gardening.

Neilan was previously the lead grower on a 1 acre forest garden and woodmeadow project at Beatle Bank Farm. He’s worked on trees and orchards across York and the surrounding areas.

Neilan is passionate about local food systems and the power of food growing to create community.

Louise

Louise has over 10 years of working with fruit trees. Louise helped plant an orchard of 50 plus trees in a community garden where she learnt how not to plant an orchard and from that point onwards has worked to understand best practice in all aspects of orchard & tree care.

Louise's seven years working for Edible York as The Abundance project coordinator has really honed her knowledge of tree fruit.

She is a member of the northern fruit group & regularly helps with the apple identification at their Apple weekend at RHS Harlow Carr.

Jai

Jai’s pruning experience comes from working on family farms in Italy. Helping with olive harvests, preserving produce and developing permaculture projects. He got accustomed to the work at scale, and the unquantifiable ‘feel’ of a well shaped tree. He’s since pruned orchards of well maintained and healthy trees, aging and diseased ones, and out of hand congested ones too.

Jai's main motivation is the love of the flavour of a good fruit when ripe; it’s good pruning which gets you that. Jai was also one of the creators of the Wild York map, and is part of the team at Homestead Park.
